It serves as a provincial-level public library and acts as Ningxia's central hub for document collection and lending, public information resource sharing, ancient book preservation, professional training for library staff, and as an autonomous region-level patriotic education base. In May 2018, it was designated as a National First-Class Library.ShareThe library traces its origins back to 1953 when the Yinchuan People's Library was reorganized into the Ningxia Provincial Library. In October 1959, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Library was officially established, and in 1963, it absorbed the Yinchuan City Library. A new library building was completed and opened to the public in 2008.
According to data from its official website as of January 2021, the Ningxia Library has a total building area of 33,200 square meters, over 2,000 reading seats, 14 institutional departments, 188 staff members, a collection of 1.9 million physical documents, and 30 TB of digital resources.
